Draft Tube Mod for '81-'83 Engines

Okay, guys. Jerry has come through for us again. I'm going to copy/paste what he wrote and post the picture he sent describing how to build our home made oil drip catcher tube:


HERE ARE THE PARTS TO BUILD THE LITTLE OIL TRAP, FOR THE DSL. FEEL FREE TO POST IT IF YOU LIKE ALL THE PARTS ARE FROM HOME DEPOT. FOR A GRAND TOTAL OF 4.60 ALL PVC PARTS ALL 1/2 INCH

1/2 IN SCREW ON CAP
1/2 EL

1/2 IN T

1 1/2 X 3/8 RIGHT ANGLE NYLON HOSE FITTING PT NO A 296 THIS IS A WATTS PT NP HOME DEPOT ALLSO.

IT FITS RIGHT UP IN THE BOTTOM OF THE ORIG, DRIP TUBE , WITH A HOSE ON THE TOP BARB AND OVER TO THE AIR IN;ET NO MORE DRIPS

Without anything for perspective, it's hard to judge the size. If the biggest pipe in the photo is 1/2", the whole thing is smaller than it looks.

I'm assuming the way the photo is oriented is the way it goes in the truck. Does the top (at the top of the photo) of this fit INSIDE the draft tube? If so, is a hose clamp used? Are there any brackets, or does it jus hang by the hoses?

I'm assuming this needs another hose to route the fumes back into the intake. If so, what size, and type?

Where does this hose connect to the intake system? How?

Finally, does this increase the possibility of the motor "running away" on motor oil?

The top side of the device will plug into the inside of the draft tube and then you'll need to put a hose clamp on it to keep it together. Be sure to put the hose clamp on before you put the oil catch device into the draft tube.

As far as the tube, I'm not sure what size barb that is, but use vacuum tubing in the right size and route it to the air cleaner. I'm not sure where others are hooking up their tube, but I would put a tee fitting or a y-splitter at the hose that routes from the valve cover to the bottom side of the air cleaner.

I don't see how this could allow the motor to run away...

JUST A HOSE CLAMP IS ALL THATS NEEDED

THIS BARB IS FOR 3/8 THS VACC HOSE , ANY GOOD GRADE HOSE WILL BE FINE

NO THERE WOULD BE REALLY NO WAY FOR ANY AMOUNT OF OIL TO GET THAT HI, AND OF COURSE THERE IS NO VACC IN THE LINE AT LEAST NO MEASURABLE AMOUNT , THE VAPORS THAT ARE GENERATED ACTUALLY ARE MIGRATING UP AND WILL FIND THEIR WAY INTO THE AIR STREAM AND CAN BE EASILY TIED IN WHERE STEVE MENTIONED

HI JACK, THE WHOLE THING IS 4 INCHS LONG THE BARB IS 3/8 IN , JUST AS STEVE SAID, IT JUST PUSHES UP INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE DRAFT TUBE AND WITH A HOSE CLAMP IT WONT GO ANY WHERE IT ONLY WEIGHS ABOUT 3-4 ONCHES, I JUST TRUNED THE HOSE BARB SO THE VACC LINE WOULD BE SORTA HIDDEN ,

AT EVERY OIL CHANGE JUST UNSCREW THE LITTLE CAP AND LET WHAT LITTLE BIT OF OIL THERE MAY BE DRAIN INTO A PAN , PROBABLY WILL NEVER GET OVER ABOUT A COUPLE OF SPOON FULLS OUT , YOU CAN ORIENT THE PIECE TO JUST ABOUT ANY ANGLE YOU WANT BEFORE GLUING THEM TOGETHER JERRY

Am I wrong in thinking that there is not enough room to do this on my 4x4? Or is this just another opportunity to get creative and greasy - courtesy of ISUZU.......

Big Daddy,

I have a 4x4 and I plan on doing this soon, but I haven't yet... anyway, thinking about it what I would probably do is cut the draft tube to about half the length of the original tube length and then that way the device will sit down by the side of the block instead of by the front differential. You should have plenty of room if you do this.
