New build thread from Arrowmntdiesel 87 4x4

Post by arrowmntdiesel »

This truck was originally introduced to the board HERE at the end of the thread. I made a comment on one of pictures that I was hoping it would end up in the ownership of Chuck (tdipup) and it actually did. Chuck has been saving parts up for a significant overhaul on his 82 4x4 diesel Pup and asked me to do the work on it. After some pictures of his truck and the rust that was present, I started looking. That said, We now have a great candidate for an overhaul that is already set up with the 5 speed 4x4 tranny.

Now that I have some of my other obligations behind me, I have pulled Chucks truck into the shop and will document the progress here. This truck is going to be painted with a color change, so since a diesel conversion is happening as well, the time for paint is right now. Time for dis-assembly.

The windshield is cracked and Chuck has a new slider for the back window, so all the glass will be coming out as well. Once I get the body off to the paint shop, then I will begin working on the conversion of the transmission from gas to diesel and also while I'm doing one, I have another 4x4 to overhaul in Tracy's (LuvCamas) and I have a 2wd that needs bearings in it as well. So 3 in one shot is the plan there. I'll keep pictures posted as progress is made.

Thanks,
Mark

Made some more progress on Chuck's truck this week, so I will attempt to keep the tread current.

I was by myself, so I had to get creative.

I wanted to be able to continue to work on the frame and running gear while the body was at the paint shop, so for the first time, I decided to pull the body from the frame. It was very close anyway, maybe an extra hour in dis-assembly? The benefits are going to be well worth the effort!

While it was hanging up in the air, I took the opportunity to do some cleaning with the pressure washer, oil eater, and a brush.

So far, so good. I wanted to get the body all prepped and cleaned prior to paint, including washing out the cowl and making sure all the body drains were opened. I did the same to the frame as well, including lifting it up in the front and pressure washing out the trash that always builds up inside the frame-rails. I will keep posted as progress continues.

I agree, but...
You must have decided to do that AFTER pulling the engine and transmission. Otherwise, I think you'd have taken the cab off first, and made the engine and transmission removal easy as pie. :)

Tracy,

Thanks, I will! I sure hope you caught my comment in the first thread regarding your transmission. I have not forgotten about you my brother! :) As a painter yourself Tracy, Am I scoring points with the painter?

Tracy,

Thanks for asking! Not a lot has happened to make an update. My window work has really kept me busy the last few months. The winter slow down is right around the corner I'm thinking and I should be able to get back on Chuck's truck. Of coarse I will keep the thread updated as work progresses.

Just wanting to make an update on this project. I have had some time again to continue forward on Chucks truck.

It is time we addressed the front end of the chassis.

Two reasons: 1 to work on the underside of the frame. 2 to work on the area at a good working height.

Prepping the metal

This next part was very challenging. 1st time in replacing the lower controll arm bushings and getting it out is no easy task! The bushing is shouldered inside the bore. What that means....short story.. it comes out in pieces! Pressing the center out of the rubber bushing and then using a metal cutting blad on the outer housing of the bushing to peal it out of the bore. Once it's out, then a small amount of filing and a quick run with a brake cylinder hone and the new bushing is ready to be pressed back in with anti-seize applied. Re-assembly is a piece of cake!

Upper control arm get 2 new bushings and they press in and out pretty easy, but a spacer needs to be made for when pressing in the bushing you dont collapse the arms together. In this picture are also the new upper and lower bushings.

More to come.

This is a big part of the overhaul that I am very happy to have back together. There are a lot of components to the front end and all the wheel seals that needed to be pulled and pressed back into place. Every unit of rubber has been replaced along with the outer drive shaft CV boots as well. Those lower control are bushings were not fun to get out. Once out though, reinstallation was easy. It's coming along Chuck... I promise!

Mark, some really interesting work! Quick question: Was removing the dashboard out of the truck a relatively easy process? It seems like you've done this multiple times - with multiple cracks in my own dashboard, it makes me wonder if trying to remove the dash to patch those cracks would simply make the situation worse.
