I took the truck to another shop, not an "econo" type place. I told them to estimate the job with the assumption that I'll remove everything needed--trim, wipers, glass, moldings, etc.

The estimate was just under $4,300. This is for two-stage paint, original colors.

If I had the money, I'd do it. It will take a while to save that much, so it's not likely to happen for its birthday, or even in time for the meet in Cayce. ;)

This is about the same amount as the ballpark estimate that the first shop quoted me when they said they always lose money on them. There's a lot of prep work to do. The hail damage is probably $1,500 of it.

where I am from that would be a pretty fair price . I would charge that to paint it , not including body work. People that have never done body and paint work just don't understand how hard this trade is. It is very psychically demanding. If you saw my brothers truck at the national meet that would have run 9 to 10k in my neck of the woods. What I am doing to my truck would run 15 to 20k around here. Honestly if one of you guys out there offered me 15k to 20k to do a frame off restore like my project I would turn you away so fast it would make your head spin  This is a picture of my 1/4 panel and the reflection of my door. This is after 2000 grit wet sand and the first round of buffing. I have to buff it one more time then hand glaze it. This is base coat clear coat PPG brand the OMNI line.

the frustrating part about this whole deal is that I have to put old parts back on or spend hundreds of dollars more putting all new or newly refinished parts on. You just can't put old crusty tail lights back on

As someone who has painted an older truck and did all the work myself the most important information I have to offer is don't do it. For the money and time spent I could have bought a nice truck that didn't need to get fixed up. I had to do it as it was a tribute to all the things my father did the hard way. The nut did not fall far from the tree.

Oops. I went to research that, and the link does not go to a specific product. Can you point it out for me? I think I'm ready to start work on this project.

Thanks.

I went with the rust encapsulator last time I did one. Do the inside of your frame while you're doing it. You wont regret it, and its super easy to do with the frame kit from Eastwood.

Yes, with the bed off-I may as well do the frame. The front half won't be quite as easy...

its not as bad as you think with the hoses that stick inside the frame.

Hey Jack, When I had the bed off my truck, I went to harbor freight and got a set of those magnetic trailer lights so I could stick them on the frame and still drive legal. You may not want to drive it while you have the bed off. Just a thought. I drove mine around for about a month that way. Phil
