C223t leaking diesel from fuel line

Post by BravoDrew »

I noticed a strong diesel smell coming from my '86 and after popping the hood could see substantial leaking from a metal high pressure fuel line, the second one in from the front.

What would cause this line to start leaking? It's been fine for years but started leaking on return from a long ~ 8 hour roadtrip.

Its the compression nut lossen or the sealing surface of the tube cracked.
With the engine running and hot, try to tighten the nut slowly until the leak stops.

I've had a few trucks that the rubber insulators holding the inj lines still had either been removed or were loose allowing for vibration and cracking the fuel lines. Yes, you could have one that's loose on the injector or pump, or cracked cap.

its posible for the return line banjo bolt to get loose and look like its the main line.. its also possible for the main line to rub through or crack if the line braces are missing. best bet is to clean it off, run it for a short time and see where its source is.

Note: whenever loosening or removing fittings with banjo bolts and sealing washers, replace the washers. Auto parts stores should have an assortment to choose from.

A very distinct possibility is the dampers on the injector lines have hardened or the rubber has deteriorated and fallen away. Believe it or not, a lot of weird and not good things can happen when they are gone. Typically this stuff doesn't just start randomly leaking especially badly enough to notice it right away, typically they might weep a little bit.

Keep us posted on what you find.

Les Schwab said one of my motor mount bushings is shot, and that maybe that the additional vibrations contributed to the lines loosening.

Is this possible?

I think the line dampers are OK, Here are pictures
