C223 Diesel leaking oil below crank case

Post by zaccardia »

Hello! I have an Isuzu c223 engine out of an old pup - the unfortunate thing is I don't know the year of the pup or engine.

The engine is now in a bobcat and I've noticed a pretty steady leak from around or below the crank case of the engine. Any direction on this would be appreciated as it's hard to find information on my unit. I've attached a picture of the leak and some other pictures of parts of the engine in hopes to help identify it.
Thanks in advance!!

The engine is a 1981 or just maybe a 1982.

I can't see the source of the leak.

Most likely the front main seal, they get some pretty deep grooves worn into them relatively quickly. It's a bit of a pain to do these, unless you really can't tolerate a leak, or have to be squeaky clean, or it's literally gushing oil, just leave it.

Thanks for the reply. Its normally worse when the motor gets up to temp but doesn't seem to leak much at all when just sitting at air temp. Would a thicker oil ever help? It's not bad just annoying and a bit messy.

Thicker oil wont help. Replacing whatever seal is leaking is the only way to stop the leak

A new seal may not be enough. You may also need to install a sleeve over the end of the shaft that is leaking.

You can just avoid driving the new seal in all the way. Done that plenty of times, works great, the trick is getting it perpendicular. Perfectly doable if you are patient.

Do you have any pictures for what you have done? Being that this motor is in a bobcat, is it something you would worry about or just run it and keep an eye on the leak? Unlike a truck it's only going to be driven a few times a year. Thanks again!
