1982 Diesel LUV to 1994 Isuzu 2.3 5 speed

Post by Freeluv82diesel »

My diesel LUV/PUP transmission has failed countershaft bearings. I just picked up a gas trans from a 1994 2.3L. It appears the bellhousing is not removable on the gas trans. My question is did I get the wrong transmission or can I take the front case half apart and swap to the rear section of the gas trans? Thanks in advance for any insight.

I followed this thread:

I had a mechanic do it for me though I’ll check the shop notes when i can.

This was my story on it. I had a lot of questions

You are going to need a slip yoke that fits the 1995 transmission, because its output shaft has 27 splines rather than 17. I have one that I bought from someone who was parting out a Trooper. I bought it to save it from getting scrapped, thinking someone would eventually need it. I need $100 for it (shipped) to break even. Let me know if you want it.

But you need to be sure your failed countershaft didn't trash the bell housing.

The actual BELLHOUSING doesn't come off. It's the front half of the transmission case. Splits about midway. The front bearing cover will need to be removed and a retaining clip around the input bearing. I'll post a link to two transmissions I took apart years ago.

As far as the speedometer gear and oil goes, I think there's an Oring around the gear stem, but I'm not 100%.sure. I looked for pictures but couldn't find one. Jack may remember. I will say the Jack & I can't emphasize enough how cautious you must be when removing the gear housing (what the cable connects to). There's 1 little bolt holding it in. The bolt goes through a hole in a tab sticking out. DON'T PRY UNDER THAT TAB! It will break off. Keep the cable on, pry on the cap, wiggle wiggle wiggle it around, back & forth. Spray it and it should finally come out.

Hey Jack, if the O.P. doesn't want your slip yoke I'd like to be next in line. I'm doing the same swap on my 84. I've got all the parts except that.

Thanks

Mike, please email me about the slip yoke if he hasn't replied in a couple of days.

Good Morning Jack,

It's been a couple days. I don't know where to find your email address. I'd like to go ahead with the purchase of your slip yoke.

Thanks

Figured I'd update, I have a short bed, the isuzu I removed the trans from was also a short bed, but the u-joint sizes are different, so I took the original driveshaft and the donor to the machine shop. They will take the old rear yoke and sleeve it to the donor driveline. The swap is really easy.
