Rough cold start
So even with the factory glowing system working like it’s supposed to it’s still hard to start my engine. I gotta give it around 50% throttle for it to fire up, puffs some smoke but if I hold it it’ll start running fine after 20 secs or so. Does this sound like air leak? Or am I missing something?

Re: Rough cold start
It’s my passport with the c223 engine. To expand the issue, it will start after a few cranks but will immediately die

Yes, it does sound like an air leak to me. Try using a clear piece of plastic hose between the fuel filter and the injection pump so you can see if there are any bubbles mixed with the fuel.

Re: Rough cold start
Thanks! I will do that and report back. If I remember correctly it’s 5/16?

Yes, 5/16 or 8mm, pretty close to the same.

Re: Rough cold start
Ok installed the clear lines from the fuel filter to the ip, and from injector return line to ip. Tomorrow I’ll install from fuel filter to hard line and from ip to hard line. Something that caught my eye is that no fuel is coming from the injectors return, so idk if it’s good or my injectors are actually in great shape. The first start after installing clear lines was a lil hard but I won’t really care about it since it needed to purge some air to fill the lines, but I’ll let it sit overnight and try again tomorrow. Will report back

Re: Rough cold start
You know, I have never used a clear line from the injector return so don't know how much fuel to expect. Will need to try that.

Re: Rough cold start
So I finished installing the clear lines, and I gotta say I never felt the priming pump as stiff as it is now, and I found a leak from the line that I cut and soldered for the csd, so I fixed that and no leaks so far. It is starting better but still doesn’t run 100% when cold, advanced timing a bit and again helped but still not running the way I want it to. I did find some corrosion on the relay no 2 fusible link, so I’ll clean that, try again and report. If anyone got anymore tips I’d appreciate it. I know I don’t have the csd like I said, but I don’t think it should have that big of an impact on 20-30F

I have found that the CSD does have a very noticeable influence on cold starting, even at temps above 30 degrees F. Others report less of an effect.

Re: Rough cold start
I don't think it is either the lack of a CSD or a faulty glow system because it does fire. And if there is continuous fuel delivery it should keep on firing.
You mentioned that there is no fuel return. Does that include the fuel from the injection pump fuel return line? The injection pump should always have a fair amount of return fuel. If not, then I suspect that there is a bad restriction in the fuel feed somewhere. Also, you mentioned that the primer pump is hard to push. When things are right, the pump is firm but easily pushed.
Why don't you put the fuel return line from the pump into a jar and try using the primer pump to see if any fuel flows. It should. You could also do this with the engine running.

Re: Rough cold start
Sorry Paul, I mean there’s no return from the injectors but there’s a constant flow from the injection pump, the primer is firm but not stiff, and it does make fuel flow from the return. Yesterday while messing with it I found a wire from the sensing resistor was super loose, soldered it and let it sit overnight. Today I tried to fire it up and surprise! She fired on the first try, missed for 2-3 seconds and then smoothed up, but I’ve traced that to be a bad injector, since it smokes at idle even when fully warmed, so maybe one of them is dripping. That’s a different issue tho and my main problem is pretty much fixed!! Finally!! Next time I’m off I’ll pull the injectors and send them to a lab. Thanks for all your help!!Paul wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 12:36 am I don't think it is either the lack of a CSD or a faulty glow system because it does fire.
