Pup vs pickup spindles

I've got an 86 pup. I found a 1988 pickup at the local pick and pull. I read on here that you can swap to the later spindle and use Toyota hubs for a 5 lug swap. The newer spindles are some 3" shorter between ball joint mounts and the upper joint goes in from the top. I posted pics of each one. It doesn't seem this is just a simple swap. Has anyone made this work?
