Isuzu Diesel in a '78~'79 Ford Pickup Spotted

Post by Isuzu Faster »

Interesting find from a buddy of mine at FoMoCo. It appears to be a very old school Isuzu diesel judging by the font on the valve cover, but can't quite pinpoint the origin or vintage of the motor. Is it a diesel out of a forklift? Was it imported from out of country? Thought I'd run it by you guys.

It's probably a 6 cyl out of one of bigger trucks like an NQR. Or maybe it was in a marine application... Definitely "old" school as it's got an inline mechanical injection pump with no electronics on it. It's definitely a swap as they sprayed some crappy foam on the firewall, the rat's nest of wiring and whatever that janky looking bracket thing is...

This vintage is well before Isuzu began importing big trucks for the US market. I was thinking it's out of a forklift, or perhaps as you mentioned, a marine application.

I'm no help on the engine, but at first glance of the engine bay pic, I thought that had to be the biggest wasp nest/theft deterrent I'd ever seen!

That would be one heck of a forklift to have an engine that big

Maybe a DA640? Inline six, 6.3L four stroke? Of course Isuzu made the E120, a 12L inline six too....

Ha! You're definitely right about that

I have a hunch that it's a modified 6BD1 or similar. Here's a couple of marine 6BD1's with the same font on the valve cover.

Just curious: In the Ford, can you tell what transmission it's mated to? If it's something other than an Isuzu g-box, then I'm guessing the engine didn't come from a vehicle. Likely a sizeable boat, or maybe a generator(?).
Hmmm...forklift? You mean nobody's heard of the Formulae Forklift Warehouse-to-Stockyard Trophy Dash?

It's mated to a Ford C6, using some sort of crazy adapter plate.
