Slow Site Performance (DDoS Attack)

Post by JoeIsuzu »

For several days, the site has been extremely slow. This is due to a targeted Distributed Denial of Service ("DDoS") attack. It peaked on May 10, as noted on the site homepage:
Most users ever online was 4255 on May 10, 2025 02:18 am
At least 4200 of those were not actual, legitimate site visitors, but were automated requests, designed to overwhelm the site.

To counter this attack, I have had to block large address ranges from accessing the site. As of this moment, only 16 users are currently visiting (some of those are legitimate search engines).

The downside of this is that in blocking large ranges of addresses, we're probably blocking some legitimate visitors.

Stay tuned...

The attack has resumed, but with firewall rules in place, it is weakened. I'm seeing about 850 "guest" users at the moment, and with no impact on site responsiveness.

Not a thing, but thanks. As I write this, I see 749 "users" online, but the site is surprisingly snappy anyway. As long as performance doesn't suffer, it's fine.

They're still at it. The site now shows 1,400 concurrent users.

We're getting a break -- currently there are only "18 users online :: 5 registered, 0 hidden and 13 guests".

I don't know if it's over, or if they're just taking a break.
