I didn't think the 81 gasser was computer controlled . Frankly, I'm not familiar with the terms pcm and idm. Could you elaborate?

There are two different types of active codes the ECM flag.

Anything involved with emission systems is an A type code and will illuminate the check engine light when the engine's running.

Anything other than emission systems is a b-type code and will not illuminate the check engine light when the engine's running.

To place the ECM and diagnostics mode There are two wires dangling from the wiring harness near the ECM. Connect those together after you turn the key on, And the check engine light will blink the code 3 times. Blink (1sec pause) blink blink blink = code 13. If there's more than one active code there will be 3 seconds pause between the codes.

A codes are:
21 no signal from ignition modular
22 continuous signal from ignition module.
23 abnormal O2 sensor signal
24 abnormal coolant temperature sensor
25 abnormal RAM or ROM

B code are:
12 no signal from idle switch
13 continuous signal from idle switch
14 no signal from WOT switch
15 continuous signal from WOT switch
