C223 Cylinder Head New Valves old Guides?
I have a question. My C223 Diesel finally gave up its factory headgasket thats been installed and running since 1982. The head is cracked where they all do in between the valve seats. Compression was as follows. 325 on one 280 on number 2 and 3 both and 325 on 4. I have another head that is disassembled ready for rebuild but am waiting on my seat cutters to come in. I have new Nippon valves, seats, guides springs retainers the works even a new cam and tappets. Question is can i use my new valves in the old head and possibly lapp the new valves to the old seats without changing guides out ? Not so much a question as should you do it but can you do so? And will it prematurely ruin my new valves? Ive heard of others that have done so. But i need this truck and my seat cutter is not arriving until next month. I have two choices i believe. Use my old cracked up head with a new head gasket, the original valves lapped into there original seats with new seals on and possibly do a head again in the near future. Or use my good head with no cracks now, with the new head gasket, new valves and springs. I have ordered the seat cutter and do not have it yet. I know as soon as i drive in new guides i will have to re-cut the seats. Im debating putting the old head back together lapping them in and trying to run it however i am fearful of dropping a valve as some springs showed slight movement with light force with my fingers. Rebuilding the good head may have to wait until my seat cutter arrives but i need the truck now. Or i could put new valves in the old guides on the good head and call it good? The engine seemily ran fine once started and burned no coolant except for adding a bit every month that would dissapear from the overflow. However starting became an issue with the problem in the cold. It got to where it wouldnt want to start after being plugged in all night. This is how i noticed the problem .
