Naturally Aspirated Gear Driven C223 pictures
Just posted about the factory gear driven C223 from Japan. Since I am posting pictures, here is a gear driven non-turbo C223 that I put together last winter. It is now installed in an '83 (? can't remember) Pup. It also has an inline injection pump from a C240 Marine application. Runs pretty good.

Does not seem noisy at all, but it is hard to tell. The truck is louder now with the factory air cleaner and silencer removed. Noisy with the hood open, sounds like a big air pump sucking air, but the gear drive part seems to be amazingly quiet. Do not have very many miles on it yet, but may make it the daily driver this summer.

Re: Naturally Aspirated Gear Driven C223 pictures
Does it govern out at the same RPM? The Nissan trucks were gear driven way back in 83. I have a rusty one with 200,000 miles deteriating in the woods. It ran strong the couple hundred miles I put on. It still had 425 lbs of compression when I had the injectors out to clean them and checked compresssion. Factory high spec is 427 if I remember. Georoadram has three above. I always wondered why the PUPS werent gear driven or at least a double row chain like the old Toyota 22R.

Re: Naturally Aspirated Gear Driven C223 pictures
No, I can tell that it does not rev as high as the rotary pump. And when you try to rev it high, the governor tries to kick it back. I can feel it in the accelerator pedal, but after driven for awhile, it is easy to get used to it. Also, have not put enough miles on it yet to do a fuel mileage comparison, but would assume that it will use slightly more fuel. Does smoke a bit when I get on it. So, since I seem to already have ample fuel delivery.... I'm already having thoughts of turbo-ing it. Which would be un-necessary project number 700.

How are the gears lubricated? Looks VERY cool.

Re: Naturally Aspirated Gear Driven C223 pictures
Oil lubricated through an oil passage, just like the industrial engines. The passage is blocked off by the aluminum timing belt gear plate on the C223. And the oil return holes are plugged with block plugs, down at the bottom of the block above the crank.

Correction, return holes are just below the crank. Sorry about that. They are visible in one of the pictures.

Re: Naturally Aspirated Gear Driven C223 pictures
Wow, that's great.
How about the engine-off system?
In my country C190/C240 with inline pump use valve to close the air intake, while the C223 with rotary pump use solenoid to close the fuel supply.
I'm loosing the mechanical system to close the air intake in my C190 and my closest plan is to replace the fuel pump from inline to rotary type.

Re: Naturally Aspirated Gear Driven C223 pictures
The inline pump being used has a fuel shutoff lever, on the back side of the pump. You can use a fuel shutoff cable from an older diesel tractor, forklift, etc.., or make a pull rod to activate it. Very simple mechanical system, no power needed to activate fuel flow.

Re: Naturally Aspirated Gear Driven C223 pictures
Do you have any picture of it?
Maybe our inline pump is different with your C240.
Right now I'm using cable that I have to pull from cabin to turn off the engine

Re: Naturally Aspirated Gear Driven C223 pictures
Hello, sorry If i’m bumping up an old thread but was wondering if the rotation of the IP pump on a gear driven c223 was clockwise or counterclockwise? Recently found out my trooper was gear driven. Still waiting for parts so can’t test it out on my engine.

Re: Naturally Aspirated Gear Driven C223 pictures
Hello,
Wow, have not been on this forum for years, have not messed with the Isuzu diesels for quite some time. Still have the gear driven one buried in a building, have not started it in probably 3 or 4 years. I can not remember which way the gear driven pump turns, but I seem to think it might turn opposite of the belt driven one. Seems like a lifetime ago when I put it together, a lot has happened in the past 10 years, most of it not good lol. But if I get a chance sometime soon, I will try to take a look at it and see if I can tell. Sorry I cant remember !
