Mark's (arrowmntdiesel) Memphis road trip

Post by arrowmntdiesel »

As I attempt to bring into perspective the events of the past 7 weeks and with the passing of our dear friend Ron and previous to that, Mike, I'm left with the thought of "Priorities" in the form of a question? Do I have them in the right order? Am I putting 1st those that need to be 1st? With the ability to receive a honest 2nd opinion, I turned to my Wife and asked Teresa the same question only to get the same support that she and the rest of my family gives to me as the head of this wonderful family that I have been blessed with.
During the final "Push" of getting the truck finished and ready for a trip, I had moved the camp trailer down to the window shop so that I could stay in town to work late on the truck. Both Teresa and my daughter came into town and stayed with me in the trailer. What wonderful support! I was able to take a final exam in my electronics class a week early which allowed for a good deal of time that final week before departure. I took a three week break from singing on the worship team at church in an attempt to stay on schedule for the trip. All of this action showed where my "Priorities" have been over the last few weeks.....! Back to the question......are they in the right place? :?: For me, I can only find the answer in the same way I always look for it, through seeking answers in prayer and looking for the results in the actions that proceed from the results of those prayers! As it is always been said "that hind-sight is 20/20 vision", I can look back over the past events of May and June and see a tremendous amount of blessings and guidance from what I choose to believe as God's blessings. From the skills that He has given me with my hands and mind, to the family that supports me both from within my own home and the family outside my home including this family here! The blessing of health, the blessing of being able to give and receive. The blessing of the ability to communicate with others. So many blessings when I choose to take the time to look for them and to acknowledge them. For now, I see no reason to change the priority of God, Family, Country and Isuzu Pup's! :D

I know that was a long intoduction to this new post, but it just seemed like I needed to say it. To the pictures and the trip.....!

This is Monday the 19th of June and it is 4pm. About 10 hours later than when I wanted to depart but at least the same day. Fueling up in Medford, Or.

This will be my bed for the next few days and the blanket was made by my oldest daughter for Fathers day and given to me yesterday.

Still in Oregon headed east over the mountains

Tenn 036.JPG

Tenn 037.JPG

In Utah now and the landscape has changed alot. Spent the first night high in the mountains and had ice on my windshield the next morning. This was the only issue I had with the truck the entire trip and it was very difficult to start that morning. New glow plugs were installed at Tenn. thanks to a call ahead to Jerry!

Tenn 040.JPG

This would be heading out into the Wyoming country and the landscape didn't change to much during that whole trek through the state. Alot of Nebraska was traveled at night due to wanting to be in Iowa on Thursday.

Tenn 043.JPG

Here I am at the home of Bob Gay in Sloan, Iowa. He has 1500 acres of corn and soy beans that they farm each year and I have met him for the first time today. His brother lives in Rogue River, Or and is a member here on the site. (CoyotePup) Jerry was at the NW pup meet in 08 at our home and drives a very nice Turbo/D spacecab 4x4. For the past several years (10+) they have been swapping parts and trucks from rusty mid-west bodies to good Oregon bodies. I hear Bob has a stash of Pup Parts and I'm here to see for myself.

Tenn. Meet 015.JPG

Tenn 085.JPG

This is Bob and his 4x4 long bed diesel with a trooper turbo engine in it. The pictures of what I found will be in the next post. I know I can't make one big post, so i will break it up into smaller ones.

I was able to score a few items that Bob had duplicates of and bring them to the Meet with me. Bob kept one complete turbo set up for the next project, but let me purchase two intake and exhaust set-ups for the turbos. BTW.. I still have them. $100 per set is what I was asking, but no takers at the meet.

Tenn 083.JPG

A PS pump and diesel bracket is in that pile as well.

Tenn 084.JPG

OK, back on the road to Memphis and to the meet. I'll catch up with Bob again, "you can take that to the bank!"

Breakfast Saturday morning and a chance to listen in on some very interesting conversations and get our bellies taken care of for the moment.

Tenn 087.JPG

This is John's Pup Parts on Wheels and had a good center console and other parts that should have been snatched right up, but I believe John still has that console if anyone is interested. It sure was nice to meet John, a long time member here on the site with alot of good information on our Pup's.

Tenn 088.JPG

JacksonFarms customized Turbo Pup. Trailered to the meet by a Dodge  Good running truck though and understandable why with no AC and two grown men. HA HA. We all just thanked them for making the trip and the effort.

Tenn 090.JPG

More Conversations and visiting in the parking lot.

Tenn 093.JPG

It's cool inside the building and the demonstrations are about to begin. We had to put down material on the floor of this beautiful white activity room that will most likely never see a greasy engine again. Leave it to Pup People!

Tenn 101.JPG

Knee deep in the timing demonstration and leave it to Jerry, as many times as I have done timing on these engines, I still learned something new about it. Now I know right were the 60-45 degree mark is while doing the finish timing on the pump with the guage. Cool! Thanks Jerry!

Tenn. Meet 004.JPG

Tenn. Meet 006.JPG

I can't believe I didn't get a photo of dinner that Saturday evening at the event. It was wonderful pulled pork BBQ and the desert of Pup Cake! Thank you so much to all the Ladies who provided such valued support in putting this event on. Tina, I sure wish you could have met my Wife Teresa, you both would have hit it off so well.

This photo is back on the bridge of the USS IsuzuPup.com. Call it command central if you will. :D We..(Jack, his son Matt and myself) are all online attempting to get caught up. I never did! Anna, Jack's daughter is taking the picture.

Tenn. Meet 008.JPG

I was fortunate enough to be able to spend Sunday with Jack and his family and attend their fellowship family. Good solid Bible teaching and Jack is very well respected their of coarse. I was very warmly welcomed and would encourge an member to drop in while near Memphis. Park Ave. Church of Christ.

Jack and I both had a bit of time Sun. afternoon to unload the truck bed that I had hauled from Oregon and to load up a few items from his stash as well. Got the glow plugs changed in his Pup as well as mine Saturday afternoon. Thanks so much for the hospitallity and the wonderful time!

More to come of the trip back home.

Mark it's nice know men that have their priorities in order. God allows us to wander around sometimes to figure out for ourselves what that order is. Sounds like you got it right. I enjoyed pictures. All the best Phil Cottingham

After meeting up with a family member on Monday in Arkansas and staying over night, I was back on the road with my almost empty trailer. Two boxes are mine and the one in the middle is the NOS 3rd gen short block for Tracy (LuvCamas). Purchase a few months ago from a fellow member and just waiting to make it to the PNW to reside in a very nice little TurboD Pup that Tracy has.

Tenn. Meet 014.JPG

Heading North through Arkansas, Missouri, and Iowa heading towards I-90 west through S. Dakota.

Tenn. Meet 013.JPG

Anybody recognize the corner of that barn?.. Just couldn't go home with that trailer so empty. Stopped by and saw my new friend Bob on the way home and helped him with a cleaning project that he had been wanting to do. No problem there except ran out of room and got a bit heavier leaving than when I was coming. :? And to think I was going to sell the trailer and come back home empty.....Yeh right!

Tenn. Meet 018.JPG

All loaded up after a good nights sleep and shower at Bob's. Thanks again Bob if you get on and visit us.

Tenn. Meet 019.JPG

I found this very interesting in the state of S. Dakota where they actually harvest the roadside grass. I have often though why they don't do that here in Oregon. Lot's of good grass hay just get mowed down every year.

Tenn. Meet 027.JPG

I guess I'm getting bored with the endless driving through these two long states of S. Dakota and Montana. Here is a shot of the engine verse speed. This was a great trip for that 4:10 rear gear in the spacecab.

Tenn. Meet 026.JPG

Up at first light and ready to hit the road after some breakfast and coffee.

Tenn. Meet 036.JPG

Tenn. Meet 035.JPG

Passed this on the freeway and did a U-turn 7 miles out of my way. Never did get to walk through it. Not allowed and they said nothing older than 95. Big Bummer!

Tenn. Meet 038.JPG

The Long train and way off in the distance I see Mountains! Yes!

Tenn. Meet 042.JPG

In Montana now and the sight of evergreens and rocks let's me know that I am getting close to "the West"

Tenn. Meet 050.JPG

This happened late Thursday night as I am coming into Idaho. Now this is the engine age, The truck odometer when I change it over was at 126k. I had to keep looking down at the guage so as not to forget to stop and take the picture. I was pulled over within 5 miles to go to sleep.

Tenn. Meet 055.JPG

Tenn. Meet 057.JPG

Tenn. Meet 058.JPG

One more set of photos to come on the finish leg of my journey and the closing thoughts.
Thanks for listening.

I've come through Idaho and down the East side of Washington State. Oregon is within sight distance and all that separates me from it is the mighty Columbia River. I have never been down the Washington side of the gorge and I need to meet up with Tracy anyway so I decide to stay on the Washington side and travel down highway 14.

Tenn. Meet 060.JPG

I know there has to be a Pup in there somewhere?

Tenn. Meet 067.JPG

Tenn. Meet 063.JPG

That was all that was left of the diesel doner. Here is the picture of the truck that the engine now resides in.

Tenn. Meet 062.JPG

And for $5 and a IsuzuPup.com window sticker, I was allowed to pick the carcass. :D

Tenn. Meet 066.JPG

Looking down the gorge and then turning back around and looking up. The dam is the John Day dam. Alot of water coming through those turbines.

Tenn. Meet 070.JPG

Tenn. Meet 072.JPG

Oregon is just across the water, but still not home yet!

Tenn. Meet 080.JPG

I've met up with Tracy now and have crossed over the river into Portland. I know right where I'm at now and can smell home.....litterally... I am greeted with overcast skys and a light rain. I Love Home! Cool and not above 70 degrees.

Tenn. Meet 082.JPG

I've spent Friday night at Uncle Donnies and had a wonderful pancake breakfast put on by the local Loins club for the 4th of July. Donnie insisted on filling some vacant space on the trailer, so now I still a bit heavier. Always like to score points with my Aunt Mary by taking something home with me! This is coming down into one of the valleys close to home and I am very excited to finally near my journeys end.

Tenn. Meet 085.JPG

This is the last summit before dropping down into the Rogue River valley and the moisture sure is a welcome sight on the last day of June!

Tenn. Meet 090.JPG

This is the final turn into my driveway at home and a picture of the load as I pulled in. The rims are for Dad and their motorhome. A gift from Uncle Donnie. The rest of the stuff is all Isuzu and I can't wait to dig into it to see what all is there. Some of it was just loaded on in cartons. Of coarse I will keep the board posted.

Tenn. Meet 100.JPG

Tenn. Meet 099.JPG

The final picture was taken by Teresa as I was getting out of the truck. What a welcome site to see my Wife! But I don't recognize that old man in the truck?.... What happened to his hair? Well, I was wanting to get that done before the trip, but just never had a chance, well some where along the line in Arkansas I found a barber and he didn't know what scissors are. Oh well, It sure does feel good..... Both the hair and to be home!

Tenn. Meet 102.JPG

Again, I can't say Thanks enough to all who had a part of putting this wonderful event on and for making this community one of strength and unity. The people I met for the first time and those that I have known for along time are all good people. My heart goes out to Jeanette and the sorrow that she and her family have in front of them and also to Capt Kelly's family. You will all be in our Prayers. To David Wallace... It's no wonder you drive a Trooper.... You are just like that Isuzu diesel Trooper, No matter what comes your way..... you just deal with it and keep trooping ahead! Thanks for making the effort and I will see you back home soon.

Mark, you words have been an inspiration to me! Thanks for the sacrifices you and the family made so you could be there at the meet. I so wish the wives could have met one another. You DO have your priorities in order! God has answered my prayers and given you a safe trip back home. Thanks for taking the time to share your road trip pictures with us all. I have never seen such beautiful countryside.

Mark, thanks for sharing your tour to and from Memphis with us all. It was so good to spend time with you and the time that we got to talk with each other one on one. I know that your pup will now crank better now that you have those new glow plugs and all of those flaky connections on the GP circuit repaired. Now just get yourself one of the newer DVM's and you'll be in business.. Glad you returned safe, now we'll all waiting to see how David makes it home.

That was an awesome trip and one I will never forget. I look forward to the time when I can take my wife with me as well.

You now own a truck that would put similar memories in your file and make sure you got to your destination and back safely. Give it a try and share your trip.....with pictures of coarse. :D

Thanks for the comments.
