Re: Bye-bye gearbox
After dismantling the gearbox I found what appears to be the cardboard seal from under the cap of a can of oil. It was lodged between the 3rd gear block ring and the 3-4 synchronizer preventing it from coming all the way out of 4th gear. The moment I engaged 5th it was all over.

Re: Clutch/cable problem?
If you haven't yet you should also replace the clutch cable . Around 50 bucks on Amazon. Well worth it. When mine started ripping through firewall I bought a new cable and then cut the old one open, found it had started fraying apart on the inside.

Re: Blower Motor Fan blowing fuse
Disconnect the wire at the motor, if it blows the fuse again it's the switch or wire. If it doesn't blow it's the motor.

Re: Bye-bye gearbox
Usually the weakest spots in a gearbox are the bearings or the gear teeth. I have to admit I have never seen a shaft snapped like a twig.

Re: Bye-bye gearbox
Getting ready to drop it out right now I'll post pics. If it's beyond help I'm going for the later year gearboxes that are stronger. I seem to remember someone posted a list of the later years that are interchangeable. My wife says I should follow my bucket list and drop in a small block and a turbo...

Re: Bye-bye gearbox
It's going forward in reverse because it was still engaged in 4th. Pulled the drain plug, still has all its oil. Oil is still clean and see through. Some fine metal powder on the magnet but barely enough to cover the head of a finishing nail.i ran a coat hanger around inside the drain hole, no teeth...
