Diesel swap questions for '88 Pickup

Postby Gus » Fri Sep 13, 2019 9:54 am

Hello HeathW. I don’t have an answer but a few questions. I have a ‘88 2wd I’d like to put a diesel in. What advice can you be so kind to give me? How about matching clutch, bell housing and such? I’d like to add a/c also. Thanks-Gus

Gus,

I split your diesel swap questions out into a new topic (here).

Please tell us more about your '88. Is it a 2.3 or a 2.6? If 2.6, you will need a transmission with the diesel engine. If 2.3, you will need a diesel bell housing (that's actually the front case half). All this is assuming you're wanting to put a 2.2L C223 in.

Quite positive it’s a 2.6. I work out of town and I’m not where I can double check. As I remember from the vin it has a “Z” in it designating 2.6. I’ve been looking around for a doner truck but they are rare for shur.
Thank you for help.

I had a diesel donor from an 86. I did swap the bell housing from the diesel. I used the gas burners wiring harness. I had to shim the motor mounts 3/4 thick. I had a radiator shop swap the inlet and outlet. That is all I can remember off the top of my head but if you have specifics I can go look. I did the swap in 2011. I did the A/c and power steering in 2013.

If it is a 2.6. I believe it is a hydraulic clutch and the transmission will not mate as well.

I was under the impression that the 2wd's came with the 2.3.

It may be a 2.3 then as it has a 5spd and the clutch is cable operated.simple, not complex at all.thats what I like about the truck.

Should be a 2.3
It's not pronounced "Ih-soo-zoo", it's pronounced "It-screws-you"

Your 64 C20 sounds interesting with the 283.
Funny you say “it screws you” I call it a “nznsi” - Nuznsie... it was my dads truck. The local dealer at the time sold a bunch of the plain white shortbeds with the plastic toolboxes.i was always mistaking his truck for someone else.one day I noticed the grill badge just snapped in so I turned it upside down as an easy identifier.he drove it almost a year before noticing it.
I also have a ‘88 Chevy 1/2 ton v6 4spd and ‘80 c30 w a dump bed. Along with some tractors.
