Right turn woes

Postby Cheappup » Sat May 04, 2019 10:28 pm

92 Pickup. Not sure yet which engine. 5 speed. Misses when I turn right....? All vacuum lines are intact. Newish spark plugs, wires, cap. Any ideas?

The engine probably matters. Some are EFI, some are carb'ed.

It’s carbed. Could the cat have anything to do with it?

I give up, but I don't know the gas engines. As far as I know, carb'ed would indicate a 2.3--but for all I know, the 3.1 may be carb'ed. Maybe someone else here will know how to diagnose.

Was this symptom 1x, 2x, been ongoing for a long time? Is your gas tank full or almost empty? Is jt an electrical ignition miss or starving for gas miss?

I'd park it, block wheels, set brakes, set the idle up, jack up the right side and see what happens. If nothing happens, let it back down, pop hood and move hoses & wiring around by hand and see if it'll act up. Look for loose plug wire, harness rubbing on frame or steering components, etc

In the dark wiggle wires and look for any sparks or arcing. Also look for chaffed wiring.

Good luck

Maybe you've got a broken motor mount, allowing plug wires to contact the underside hood, or firewall.
Maybe your battery is loose, compromising its connections.
Maybe your carb needle valve and/or float is sticky.
Maybe, in a past life, your truck was a NASCAR racer, and doesn't know what a "right turn" is.
The cat might've been a factor, but only for a brief, horrible moment.....hah!
