REAR CRANKSHAFT SEAL COVER PLATE

Postby 2sk8 » Mon Apr 29, 2019 8:58 pm

Hi everyone.

I want to share a cover plate I made for the rear crankshaft seal.

Some time ago I read a few stories here in the forum about the rear seal going loose.

And I though that was just bad luck until it happened to me as well recently.

My rear seal came loose and it cost me towing, almost seized the engine plus a lot of work removing the transmission, clutch and so on.

I highly recommend people install the rear cover when working on the rear seal, clutch or transmission, is just very cheap insurance and peace of mind.

I mean the front crankshaft seal has a cover to prevent it from going loose so it makes sense to have one on the back as well.

The best rear oil seal to use is the one with no metal around it:

Part #: ITM ENGINE COMPONENTS 1501902

105 mm x 82 mm x 12 mm

You can also buy the seal with no metal around from Jerry.

Other part numbers (Need to buy from Europe):

Victor Reinz 81-51148-30

CORTECO 12013892B

AJUSA 15037000

ELRING 232.300

I used 20 gauge (1mm thick) galvanized sheet metal.

Used some medium thread locker on the 5 bolts securing the cover plates.

To make the plate:

Print and place drawing over sheet metal secured with tape or light paper glue.

Mark with a punch and drill the big hole (3 1/2") first (Using a drill press). Then mark the other smaller holes and proceed to drill them.

The 13mm and 6 mm holes are a little tight but you want them like that to help you center the big hole as perfectly as possible around the crankshaft.

You want all around 4mm clearance or so.

You may have to make the little holes a bit bigger, but don't go too big.

Just enough to have the plate nicely centered.

Drawing and pictures.
