Rear end damage? That's it? Your insurance should let you keep it. The damage looks minimal.

It's completely the owner's choice whether to accept an insurance settlement. If you decline their settlement, the truck is still yours (unless you already signed it over to them). Settlements are negotiable, regardless what they try to tell you. As Andy suggested, you should be able to buy it back for the salvage price (but it will have a blemishes title if you do). I'd keep it and negotiate for the best possible settlement.
Unfortunately, SpaceCab beds are rare rare rare.

Incidentally, collision insurance is a huge waste for these vehicles. As you can see, the most minor damage results in the truck getting totaled, and the valuation is never enough. Since this was a rear-end collision, the other driver was likely at fault, so (depending on your state) you're probably dealing with the other party's insurance company. If your insurance company is doing the negotiating, you may want to take it over yourself. They seem to follow a one-size-fits-all template that does not end well for owners attached to their older vehicles.

Well, its got a bid at the auction...someones buying it. Whoever gets it should be pretty happy with it. Solid daily driver once the rearend and a few other issues from the crash are fixed.

May we ask how much the insurance company gave you?

It sold for $900. In case anyone was curious. Sad, but we moved on. Whoever won it will be the 3rd owner. I think we had it for 13-14 yrs.

Re: With a heavy heart...
You could have bought it back from the insurance company for approximately 20 cents on the dollar
