AC questions for 85 pup. Need help!

Postby missionkiter » Tue Jun 05, 2018 1:00 pm

I took a AC system off of a non-running 85 Pup and I am trying to install it into my 85 Pup. Everything seems pretty easy. I am planning on replacing the drier, O-rings, purging the condenser, evaporator and hard lines. Is there anything else I should do before I install these parts?

There are a few components connected to the evaporator that I am unfamiliar with. Can someone please identify these parts for me (yes I have already tried searching the internet) There are also thin air lines running off of these parts and I don't know where to connect them. can someone please help me?

Very Respectfully :D

Did your truck that youre installing the ac ever have ac? If not, the fan motor box on ac models has an air recirculation flap on top. Its pulled open & closed by vacuum I think. If you dont have recirculation flap, youll have hot fresh air pouring through the ac

On an ac truck, remove the glove box and look to the right corner above the fan blower motor.

You should just get the blower assembly from an '84-'91 Trooper that has a/c. That flap is part of the blower assembly. You could also snag whatever other parts you're missing. The hard part will be the a/c controls. The ones from the Trooper won't fit.

Yes. There are a few listings for parts in the Parts section if you haven't checked them out yet.

yea I have been looking but I have not found it yet but I will keep looking. I purchased a eBay blower assembly off of a 89 trooper. You really saved me from starting this project early. I am not going start until I have all of the parts.

Thanks Jack!

There were no P'ups after '87. The control assembly needs to come from a 1981-1987 P'up with FACTORY A/C. Most (if not all) aftermarket A/C systems used the non-A/C controls, which lack a "MAX" setting to close the diverter door (or "flap").

Jack,

The blower assemble arrived and it passed a bench test. Quick question. Could I rewire the blower assemble's flap to open and close from a stand alone switch that I would add to the dash?

Would that allow the system to function correctly?

Thanks for all of your help!

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I tjink tje recirculation flap/damper moves with a vacuum servo. If so, you could put a "T" in the small vacuum line off the alternator before it gets to the fast idle vacuum switch on the left inner fender. Then if you could get your hands on another vacuum switch, you could power it with 12v from a switch on the dash.

Yes and I also can't find a power line for the A/C Compressor clutch so I think the same switch would also have to power the compressor clutch. I think it would workout, but I am not totally sure.
