15"'s on a 4x4 Pup: what lift for proper clearance

Whether it's up high or draggin', this is the place to discuss anything related to body and suspension modifications for street or offroad use.

15"'s on a 4x4 Pup: what lift for proper clearance

Postby Bellski » Mon May 21, 2018 11:53 pm

Hi, my PO put 15" wheels from an Xterra on my'81 4x4 pup. Which is fine...except for hard turns; they hit the frame. No bueno. My question is how much lift would i need for full clearance? I like the bigger wheels, but do lots of road driving.

Thanks....

Are the wheels hitting frame, or the tires? If it's wheels, I'm not sure how lifting it could help.

Just Tires. You would never know driving unless you are pulling an ectrwmwly tight turn or donut. Havent quite figured out pics yet but i ill try after work...

What size are the tires?

Are you hitting frame or the bottom corner of the cab?

Turn up the torsion bars. Smaller tires are the only way to go. 215/70/15 won't hit except for sharp turns in a bump. I use 225/70's and just drive carefully. You can go with 235/70's but you will have to have an inset wheel. Anything larger will need a body lift or major suspension work, like a solid axle swap

Well it"s raining pretty good so no frame on tire pics yet...i tried and they were awful. But tires are 235 75R15 's, and here is a pic of what they look like on my ol gal. I am going for a functional, typical lift like you would see on an old 4x4 toyota hunting rig: not a mudder or rock climber, just enough to hit the old Forest Service backroads with more confidence and clearance, that's why i was hoping to keep the 15's.

But now I have bigger fish to fry. We will see how Cold Start Device tastes real soon  . Been doing homework, what an insane amount of Isuzu Sensei level information here. So grateful. --Bell

If your tire is hitting the frame a lift may not do much good. More backspace or positive offset moves the inside edge of the wheel & tire closer to the frame. If they're just barely hitting a 1/4" wheel spacer just might be enough to clear, but the bad news is they'll be more likely to rub the fender with a spacer. Try the lift 1st, then try the spacer, if it clears the frame then start trimming until it clears the fender.
