1986 Spacecab Engine Rebuild

Postby rgrimm123 » Sat Jun 27, 2020 11:28 am

Due to compression readings and loosing almost a quart a day via every seal and gasket, I decided to pull the engine for a nice little project.
Below are some pictures to show my progress.

In the tappet and cam pictures, I have the rear 4 tappets with pitting and the lobes have pitting but not as bad. Is it possible to have these reground? If so, can you recommend a place or person who would do that? Thanks for your input

There is a place in Tacoma that does it. If you have it done, be sure to make it clear to not add any extra lift or alter the profile. It has been done before, but in my opinion it's kinda pointless unless you're adding loads of boost. There really isn't enough room for performance gains without risking contact which these engines are already prone to in their stock configuration. The tolerance is already really tight ( Probably less that .020 of an inch...)

Would that be Delta Camshaft? I think stock profile would be best as well. Would you recommend them for a head rebuild as well or maybe H&H Diesel? It looks like H&H might be the place for the injector and pump rebuild though. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I can't get the valves, seats, and guides from rockauto and it is probably better to have it done by a pro. Thanks Halden.

Nice truck!
Delta Cam was recommended to me by my machine shop for this work. I'd also like to ask about grinding the rockers. I haven't gotten in touch with them yet.

So there is zero runout and the camshaft feels great in its home. However, I am used to seeing a smoother surface on the ID of the camshaft bearings. Is this what they are supposed to look like? Should they be replaced? All three of them look really similar. The main bearings look great, so this one threw me for a loop. Let me know what you think. Thanks fellas.

That bushing is gunzoed. Throw in new ones.

Does anyone have the measurement limits for a 1986 c223t cylinder bore for round and taper?

I got a hold of a shop manual for a 1985 Trooper that covers the diesel engine. It gives me all the measurements I need.
