Wood Gas

Postby Halden » Mon Nov 03, 2014 9:30 pm

I am just curious to know if any of you have heard of wood gas?

I've got a friend who is working on building a set up for his house along with Solar Panels and the whole works to become even more off the grid as far as resources are concerned.

Thoughts and opinions on wood gas?

Never heard of it. Isn't denatured alcohol derived from wood?

It's called wood gasification. You can do it on gasoline engines but the whole apparatus will fill up the bed of a pickup. Phil

Yes. You can burn wood, yard waste, pellets, etc at such a temperature the biofuel is converted to methane gas. It has to be cooled before being introduced into the engine but if you search on YouTube you can find many examples of vehicles being powered by a gas generator. The Germans did it in WWII, and it was done in Europe after the war due to gasoline shortages.

The only drawback is if you need to go somewhere quick, it takes about 30 min to 'warm 'er up'.
