My 86 PUP td

Post by 86turbo/d »

I have been a long time user on this site and every time I wanted to post my story I could not find the words or time to compile all the information I wish to share. My dad bought 2 Isuzu pup’s shown below new. The blue one in 81 & red/maroon one in 86 both were diesels and both manual 4 & 5spd gearboxes with no ac. All of my childhood memories circle around these trucks from loading up materials with my dad to driving it for the the first time. I currently only have 1 truck and my plan is to make it road worthy again so I too can take it on road trips like my dad did for all of its 212k miles on the odometer. Please look past the mouth breather...haha I have since dropped that habit.

Great to see p'ups staying in the family! Welcome aboard.

Even though it might take a little longer to get there on a road trip in a p'up, I always loved driving mine on a long trip. Considering you've got a Turbo, it might not be as bad for you!

AZ is a great place for these trucks if you're in the desert!

My dad kept great records of everything so it was very nice to come across these documents. I always loved finding this type of info when I purchased a used vehicle and figured I share the historical documents since I’m sure you guys also enjoy this stuff. I may need to go back and edit/rotate the images tomorrow once I’m on a PC.

Thank you. Yes, that would be nice. I am near Tucson. But a long way until I am driving the pup.

Update: I think it has been about 3-3.5yrs of my P'up sitting(parked due to fuel leak, later diagnosed as a leaking CSD cap) and last weekend I put in a new battery, topped off the coolant, manually primed the fuel system (@ the filter), rolled the dice and cranked it over. I was so relieved the truck fired up as if it were running yesterday. No long cranks/hard start or a broken timing belt (my biggest concern). As luck would have it, registration was still good/valid (Arizona allows for 5 year registrations which was 2016 in my case) and still insured. I took it for a quick spin around the block and I couldn't stop smiling. I think I sat in the truck afterwards for 5-7 mins just re-living all the good memories I had when I was in the passenger seat.

My short term goals/milestones for the truck:
1) Complete the CSD bypass/removal/delete - My hold up is I want to find a spare hardline that I can modify so I can keep the original just in case.
2) Change fluids - Rear end makes a bit of noise and the rear yoke when pushed, has alot of movement so I assume its needing a new pinion bearing??
3) Exhaust leaks - Its looking like the exhaust manifold to turbo flange is 1 of the leaks.
4) Bench Seat - Re-upholster bench seat I pulled from a pup in a Phoenix, AZ salvage yard. (I think I have a pic of the truck that I can dig up)

This was the P'up I found using an app called row52 which allows you to check salvage years in a defined search distance. I finally found a parts vehicle so I headed to Phoenix (about 3.5hrs from my home) and this is what I found. I was hoping to get spare fenders, bumpers, doors, interior parts but it was slim pickin once I got there. I got a mirror, wiper arm and a bench seat for about $75 total.

Side note: another salvage yard search engine is car-part.com (learned of this great tool about 3 months ago when looking for Jeep cherokee & wrangler parts)

Yesterday I finished up the first wash since I got my Isuzu up and running a few weeks back. This truck has not had hubcaps for as long as I can remember so it was the icing on the cake after the first wash of 2021! This will be the first time the Isuzu has a garage to call home. I recently sold my last project of 7yrs (1993 Nissan 240sx Coupe) so I was able to move things around to give this truck a proper home in the garage. I ended up giving my Jeep Cherokee the boot so it will be out in the sun once again.

Great work! And good choice on the prized garage spot!

My P'up sat on the curb while I had a Mercedes Benz 350SDL. In retrospect, that may not have been best. ;)
