Instrument panel lights with braking

This is for "general" electrical discussions. Audio, security, remote start, and power accessories should go here, since they don't seem to fit anywhere else. Not for diesel-specific (like glow systems), or gasoline-specific (like ignition systems) topics.

Instrument panel lights with braking

Postby mskreis » Mon Nov 21, 2016 11:22 am

I admit I haven't been driving my truck much in the past several years. I've noticed that whenever I brake, the instrument panel lights. Is this normal? If not, what should I be looking at to resolve this?

Thanks,

Mark

Ok, is the brake light on the panel coming in with brake pedal pressed, or ALL dash lights coming on?

Brake light grounding through tail light . Look for 1 brake light dimmer than the other . Fix the ground on that one .

I'll check. Am I looking for a broken wire, connection within the tail light assembly?

Could be or a bad contact on the bulb . I have seen a filament broken in the bulb drop down and touch the other . I would say it is grounded through the harness . start by wiggle the bulbs . or buy a new one and change and try method .

That's kinda what I was thinking. A filament on one of the bulbs is crossed over onto another filament and ground is backtracking through the parking/dash light circuit and partially grounding that way. One of the tail light bulbs will likely be the culprit

Wow, the bulb was the culprit! I would have never considered that since it was working fine. Thanks for the help.
