Where's the blower motor resistor located?

This is for "general" electrical discussions. Audio, security, remote start, and power accessories should go here, since they don't seem to fit anywhere else. Not for diesel-specific (like glow systems), or gasoline-specific (like ignition systems) topics.

Postby 321inkwell » Sat Sep 17, 2016 2:37 pm

Hello all, I have a 1987 space cab, and the fan blows on the hi speed only. And the defrost settings blows though the vent. I going to attempt to soldier the resistor, but not sure where it is located. Can someone help. new to the pup always had the pickup. Thanks

OK correction. The resistor appears fine. But the fan still blows on hi only with the resistor unplugged.how is that possible??? Still blows on vent when on defrost???
Please any help

I was under the impression that the blower wouldn't work without the relay, unless the "HIGH" setting simply bypasses the relay (and that would actually make sense). I'd have to check mine to confirm, as I'm not sure the wiring schematic would show this.

As for blowing through vents when on "Defrost", you may have a vacuum line that is leaking, disconnected, or misrouted.

Let's not start over from scratch. I split your newest post out of the topic that it was in (?) and put it into this one, and it would be easier to follow if we stay in just this one topic for this issue. That way, all readers will see what's already been suggested, and what you've tried.

And "formal" doesn't require coat and tie--or even shoes, for that matter.

I've got to remember to see if mine will run on "high" with the resistor removed. I'll let you know.

Jason, if you remove the black plastic duck at your knees by removing one screw nearest the door, pull it out of the way. Look at the left side of the heater box. Attached are pictures of the resistor out of the box, and the heater box with the resistor location.

Well it appears that the resistor is good. Didn't see any breaks in the springs. What is the relay beside the resistor. Could that be the issue?
Thanks again

I don't know what that relay is for.

I have a strong belief that it's a blower motor relay. I say "a", for I'm not sure if there are more(?) on my vehicle. The relay in your photo, exactly as on my rig, is a 5-bladed relay with p/n 8942184970, aka an RY55 (according to RockAuto). This relay is fed by wires colored blue/white, blue/white, green, black, and black. These colors most closely resemble what my schematic shows for a blower relay. My schematic shows a white wire in place of one of the blue/whites. This relay also shares a blue/white wire with the adjacent blower motor resistor, so this is how I base my conclusion.
321inkwell says he changed the charge relay....what relay did you use (RY28? RY28T? Some other one?) and where exactly is that relay's location?

Sorry, I ought to clarify the previous post: I'm led to believe there is more than one relay for the blower motor, the one pictured is likely one of them. Also, my truck has no A/C and never has.
