Instrument Lights

This is for "general" electrical discussions. Audio, security, remote start, and power accessories should go here, since they don't seem to fit anywhere else. Not for diesel-specific (like glow systems), or gasoline-specific (like ignition systems) topics.

Instrument Lights

Postby cman » Mon Oct 26, 2015 8:35 am

Hey Gang, The instrument cluster lights on my '87 LS have quit working. The idiot lights and LS gauge cluster are fine. For sometime the instrument lights had been not coming on at start up and then coming on after a few minutes but now are out all the time. Any thoughts? Thanks - Colin

have you turned the dash light dimmer knob back & forth to see if it's a bad connection there?

I had the same thing happen to my instrument cluster, side markers and tail lights on my '86 pup. I disconnected the switch and sprayed it with electrical contact cleaner and connected it back up and everything was working again. But it could have been a loose connection and the act of disconnecting and reconnecting the wires could have done the trick.

I pulled the headlight switch - cleaned it up including the little "tab" contact for the dimmer (which rotates around a coil affair) also pressing the "tab" down to insure good friction contact, Put it all back together and "voila" nice bright instrument lights! Thanks for the help gang! Colin

How does one get the dimmer switch out?

On the P'up, the dimmer is part of the headlight switch. Since you have a different truck--it would be best to start a fresh topic with your question. Otherwise, the topic will be confusing for readers who don't notice that we're discussing different trucks.
