Recent Mods On The Space Cab

Postby Rjonesy » Mon Dec 11, 2017 1:04 pm

This past week I replaced the stock muffler with a Jones Turbine 2525 resonated. With the smaller dimensions I was able to mount it more forward and dump the exhaust in front of the wheel eliminating all of the curves around the axle. I also ran 2.5 in. pipe after the muffler. Kept the original 2" upfront. I was amazed with the increased response and a bit more high end. Pushed the pedal that last 1/4 " while doing 80 and actually felt a bit of acceleration! Not loud at all but throaty sounding.

Next I took step one in adding an intercooler. There is this hole in the front wall right in front of the breather with a rubber plug in it. Gave me an idea. I purchased an enclosed Specter filter like guys use to make snorkels. Ran the front pipe through that hole and modified a velocity stack intended to connect a 6" filter to 3" pipe in front of the wall like a ram air. I will be covering it with water repellent filter cover. Then straight back to the turbo. Ended up louder than I was thinking but not awful. Over Christmas break I plan to topmount a VW intercooler as shown in a post several years back and make the scoop functional. The gains so far have been surprising. I'm at work now so will post pics later.

Not trying to make a race car out of a toad - just trying to improve efficiency and maybe longevity by keeping things a bit cooler.

Throw a few pictures of that mod up there on the thread. Sounds interesting.

Question -What do y'all think. Would it be better to cover the opening with the water resistant filter cover material or to cover the filter inside the housing? Both? I'm planning on drilling a hole in the low spot of the filter housing, in front of the filter, and putting in a duck billed check valve like the original filter housing has to allow any moisture to drain.

All done. Probably should add one more bracket for support. Still need to clean up the edges of the hood snipping under the scoop and paint the raw edges. I removed the channeling under the scoop and think I will at some point 3D print some new inserts to better direct the airflow into the cooler.
