AFTER MARKET AC 1987 PUP 2.2 DIESEL

Post by bthood »

HEY EVERYONE!
I HAVE A QUESTION. I LIVE IN A VERY HUMID AND HOT AREA OF South Alabama. I NEED AC. I'VE FOUND A FEW AFTER MARKET TYPE SYSTEMS ON EBAY. THESE PACKAGES HAVE AN OLDER TYPE UNDER DASH EVAP THATS HUNG TO THE DASH. I DO HAVE THE FACTORY CORRECT BRACKETS FOR A COMPRESSOR ON MY ENGINE. HAS ANYONE USED ONE OF THESE "PACKAGE UNITS?" I HAVE BOUGHT BOTH GOOD AND BAD THINGS FROM EBAY. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY THOUGHT OR RECOMMENDATIONS? SOME OF THESE PACKAGES ( COMPLETE WITH A HANGING EVAP ASSEMBLY, CONDENSER, AC COMPRESSOR, AND LINES) ARE $400 TO $500.
THANKS IN ADVACE FOR YOUR HELP.

Brian,

So you have the bracket. What year is it from?

Do you have the factory a/c controls? If you have those, the rest can probably be cobbled together from P'up and Trooper parts.

But why would you even consider an aftermarket kit if you could piece together a factory system?

I don't have any factory pieces other than a compressor bracket.

Brian,

So you'd rather buy an aftermarket kit than hunt down factory components? That kit won't connect to your factory blower system and vents. It won't defrost your windshield. And it probably won't even fit the small space under the dash.

I'll ask again -- What year is your compressor bracket from? That will determine your compressor options.

You'll need:
  • A compressor (see the question above)
  • A factory A/C control panel
  • A condenser, preferably from a first-generation Trooper
  • An evaporator from either a P'up or a first-generation Trooper
  • Someone to fabricate whatever lines you can't come up with.
Someone please chime in if I forgot anything.

Frankly, the after market unit would appeal to me more than piecing together a bunch of stray parts. Now, if your truck already has the controller on the dash, recirculation/fresh air flap above blower, evaporator, or condenser, then look into scrounging up factory parts to complete the setup.
If all I had was a compressor bracket, I'd go aftermarket under dash. It may have to be mounted over by the glovebox so gearstick won't hit it.

One thing I'll mention is that on diesels with ac, there's usually a brace off the compressor bracket that bolts to the thermostat housing. A lot of vibration from low idle speed combined with loose components causes cracks in the thermostat housing. Those are obsolete. If yours cracks, you're up a creek without a paddle.

I have a lot of the parts you need that I removed from my 1986 pup.
