Stupid exhaust question

Postby wylie's pup » Wed Jul 07, 2010 1:08 am

So, went 4x4'n and high centered. Afterword had an exhaust leak. Seems to be from the mesh looking pieces just below the head pipe. Call me stupid, but what is that? Looks like a flex so the pipe won't bend under stress. How would you fix it??? Replace with a hard pipe?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian, NO! Do not replace with a hard pipe.
The flex section is essential to preventing the rest of the "hard" tubing from breaking, or worse ratteling the studs off the exhaust outlet.
On start up especially the engine moves quite a bit. The flex pipe takes the beating.
You can buy replacements at your local auto parts store or muffler repair shop.

yeah...what Eric said. But...before Isuzupup.com came along, I crossed my fingers and had the muffler guy install a hard pipe in place of the flex piece. This lasted about 14 years. Only recently did I have a new exhaust system installed along w/ a new flex piece. but don't YOU do it! !

While I use under the P'up working on the speedo, I checked the flex pipe and located the hole. I went to my metal scrap pile and found 2 1/2" ID piece of exhaust pipe. Cut it down to about a 4" piece and then cut it in half length ways with a cut off wheel. Bought two exhaust clamps and......for $5, the price of two clamps, problem solved. True to "forum" (this one) a cheap fix.

   Sad thing Larry is I know I have the clamps....somewhere. We moved about 5 years ago from a home we had built and lived in for 20 years. I get tired of looking for things I already own :!:
