When working with adapting a shroud to the radiator, the location of the fan blades into the shroud are important. If the blades are too deep into the shroud, an air cavitation will occur. To far out and the fan becomes ineffective.

I assume you want the fan just barely on the inside of the shroud or about dead even?

I poked my fingers too far over the top of the radiator today. The blades just bumped the fingers and told me I was being foolish. No loss of "red stuff", no gaping wounds, just a bit of embarrassment.

They have a shroud with two electric fans that will bolt on (costs about $120.00) The problem will be that shroud mounting tab that you need to bend over to get the battery back in the box.

Considering the three core holds at least three times the coolant the OEM radiator did, I can see no reason to go for the four core. The total thickness of the three core is pushing 2 3/4" thick. The question is, would the four core even fit? The three core just barely fits. Unless you are going to remove the fan and use their shroud and fans. THEN I wold make all sorts of measurements and have a long conversation with Wendy at Champion.

IF YOU NEED MORE FAN CLEARANCE , REMOVE THE FAN ASSY , AN D UNBOLT THE FAN FORM THE CLUTCH ASSY, NOW PUT THE FAN ON OVER THE WATER PUMP AND THE BOLT IT BACK ON THE CLUTCH ASSY ON THE BACK SIDE , THERE IS ROOM TO GET TO THE NUTS ON THE CLUTCH ASSY AND THEN STILL GET TO THE FAN BOLTS , AND THE FAN BLADE WILL BE BACK A GOOD 3/4 IN. AND SHOULD CLEAR EVERY THING , I HAV E DID THIS ON A NO. OF ENG SWAPS WITH THIS TYPE FAN SETUP,

Sorry for the delay, I just saw the message. No, fan clearance is fine. There is no room for the shroud, but the engine runs an even 1/4 up the gauge.

Decided to do this. I know I am missing the fan. I'll be adding an electric fan setup here soon. For the mean time the weather is fairly cool...

I ran one of my trucks without a fan for two years and had almost no problem.

My turbo truck has an electric fan and it comes on only when pulling a long grade on a hot day.

I know a few people who do that. It is true that most of the time your fan doesn't do anything.

I do run a 195 thermostat so it is on the high side with not a lot of room for error.

I know the general mood is always more is better, and overkill is utopia. But, I'm wondering if the 2-row would be just fine? It seems to me it'd still be more cooling capacity than stock, and would have plenty of room for shroud and fan without having to compromise at all.

Somewhere on this forum, is a post from me about a near drop in replacement. As Jerry said, above, you can move the fan back a tad. I did not and it works fine.

Champion Radiator in Cal. has a three row aluminum radiator for a 70-73 Nissan 240Z that is as close to a drop in as you can get. Just have them remove the rear passenger side mounting rib from the radiator (did I mention they are good to work with?) and you have a three row radiator that will not overheat. For my money, its the only way to go.

If you want one for a gasser, that's usually all that's available out there. The inlet/outlets are different than the diesels Check rockauto.com

Has anyone ever thought to just run long radiator hoses? There has got to be hoses out there that would run that distance no problem.

The bottom one has to be run along the bottom. Could be done I'm sure.

Any chance these would fit in a model with AC and Power Steering or does that each up too much space for the Datsun 240Z radiator to fit?
