how well will the 2.2 diesel run after turbo removal and regular intake install?

This is the place to discuss DIESEL engine modifications.

how well will the 2.2 diesel run after turbo removal and regular intake install?

Postby weubanks1973 » Tue Oct 22, 2019 10:57 am

I have a 86 trooper diesel that the turbo went out on several years ago so it was parked. I now have to re-body the frame due to a 18" red oak cab modification. I am going to install one of my 82 model body with a rusty frame. According to what I have read, I should be able to do the swap fairly easy. My question is, how bad will the turbo engine perform after I install the N\A intake and exhaust? If it performs like a regular 2.2, I will be happy with that. Just wanting to know what i have to look out for.
thanks

Is getting a new turbo out of the question? So many folks on here try to cobble together the pieces to make a turbo truck it seems a shame to go the other way.

Best of luck,

P.O. ran it with turbo bad also busted exhaust manifold. I already have the spare parts, just wandering how bad it would perform.

Sluggish. We have a member here (not active in many years) that put non turbo c223 in a 2 dr Trooper. Jerry Lemond lightened it up for this guy by removing the 4x4 axle in front and replaced it with the front suspension from a 2wd pup. I think they put a 3.75 rear end in it. Not positive about that. He told me the trooper had too much weight and wind drag. Later Jerry added a turbo setup on the engine and it made the world of difference.
So, I wouldn't recommend it. However, it might do so so with a 4.11 rear end or whatever your trooper came with.

Doesn't the c223t also have a lower compression ratio as well?

Same CR as an NA engine. Valves in a turbo engine are slightly smaller (I think?) to reduce chances of cracking between valve seats.

Seems like it oughta be about as gutless as a n/a c223 then.

Nah. Only slightly smaller valves.

Run fairly well on flat road, no wind, stock tires and minimum weight. I'm not joking about the weight. With stock 5sp and 456 gear ratio 60 mph max will get you approx 27mpg. Hills will be the death of you. enuf said, bad jerry. I get 32 mpg at 65-70 with my 86t trooper.

I will take your old manifold send me a pm i might be able to repair it. My na 223 does what its supposed to. Of course its in a 2wd luv but it will bury the speedo if your not in a hurry about it. I want the turbo though just for the hills and a little added power. One thing i saw no one mention is your timing. You pull the turbo i believe you would advance your ip a smidge to compensate and should run just fine
