Switching to MUA Diesel Trans Questions

Postby Halden » Tue Mar 12, 2019 7:39 pm

I'm wanting to switch over to an MUA Diesel Trans. Jerry Lemond mentioned I'll have to lift the body up a little bit and alter the frame. I assume this means cutting out and reattaching the cross member? Has anyone here done this swap? I'm not finding a wealth of information about swapping this trans to a pup

I don't recall anybody doing that in a P'up with a C223. We had a member who put a 4JB1-T and MUA-5 intro his 4wd P'up.

IIRC, 5th gear in the MUA is really high and may not be optimal for the n/a C223. I have mixed feelings about the usability of the high 5th gear in my transmission from an Impulse.

I have 4.10 gears so it probably would equal out to being whatever a stock 5th with a 3.73 is. I also run stock size tires. Something to cruise at 65 comfortably is what I'm looking to do.

I don't mind running near the ketchup, but it hurts economy very badly. And I'll go deaf.

That makes good sense, but with 4th gear being direct drive, it's quite a wide jump to 5th.

Running near the ketchup is fine if you have fries.

Halden,

In the process of doing my swap from a 4 speed 4x4 to a 5 speed 4x4 from a 86 Trooper. I vaguely remember someone talking about flipping the removable transmount plate that’s attached to the cross memeber to face a different way when installing a different trans.....Unfortunately I don’t recall exactly what was done but you may wanna search. I think I read about it somewhere on here. I don’t think you would have to cut the whole cross member out. Your torsion bars are integrated into the cross member.

I’ll try and search it when I get time.

Good luck,
1982, Diesel, reguler cab, short bed, 5 speed, 2wd, 185/75/14, 2" exhaust, tiny tac, 35-40 mpg.

For the MSG you can flip that plate backwards and it gives you the extra room for the 5speed. The MUA is not only longer but bigger around as well. So that is the challenge
