4x4 problems

Postby LUVFishin » Mon Feb 17, 2020 10:04 am

New to me 86 Isuzu Pup turbodiesel with the (unexpected) automatic locking hubs. When I put it in four wheel drive (high) and turn, even very slowly, there is a horrible ratcheting/grinding noise, like two gears that aren't fully meshing. I would speculate that it might be the transfer case not engaging but it is coming from the front of the truck. Hub not engaging? Any ideas on what this could be or advice will be appreciated.

This is a shot in the dark. Supposedly 81 t0 96. Somebody that knows 4x4 check this and see if it's the right info for this truck.

Thanks. I'm going to save that! BUt for now I'm going to try repacking them with grease first - hopefully it's just because it did a lot of sitting before I bought it and the 4wd was hardly used.

Think I remember Jerry recommending CV joint grease for the auto hubs. Regular wheel bearing/chassis grease is too thick.

Grease did not fix the problem like I thought it would, particularly after I found a tear in the top of one of my boots. So I may be rebuildling my hubs and bearings. Thanks for the Autozone guide link.

83 and later generally have auto lucking hubs from what I have seen. Are you missing the snap-rings that clips the locking hubs to the axle shafts? I remember I had that problem one time where it sounded like something was ratcheting, forgot a snapring or something... It won't be your transfer case. That would be like a gear grind.

If your CV joints don't have slop you'll be fine just cleaning them. Typically they will only make noise on a tightish turn. Even if they're exposed from a tear, if you don't use 4ws, there shouldn't be any wear because they haven't been turning.

I do have the auto locking hubs. I took it to my mechanic and he thought the CV joint is broken. I guess I have to get in there myself and take a closer look, at the CV joint or for the snap-ring. Thanks for the advice.

If I need to replace the CV joint does anyone know if I can use one from an 82 LUV diesel and put it into my 86 pup (turbodiesel)?

You can just rebuild your CV if you need to. It's very easy. I am not certain if the 81-82 CVs are compatible with 86. There are some slight variants across the years with some minor things.

That's great to hear about the rebuild. This is all new to me but I will give it a shot.
