Putputinpup,

I checked all fuses and the fuses look good. I am going to get a 9 volt battery to place in my harbor freight free multimeter. So I can check voltages as you said in your post. Thank you for your post.

Swvaed,

Thank you for the pdf file link. Isuzupup.com needs to have a "Library" of hyperlinks just to have those types of data sheets. Thank you for the post and hyperlink.

Here are photos of the dimmer switch / turn signal switch unit. Replacing it fixed my not having low beams anymore just high beams. The turn signal bulbs not working turned out to be burnt out bulbs.

Hopefully you kept the old one. I think Larry Quick (quicknotslow) was cleaning\rebuilding those at one time for others. He's not very active on the forum much anymore

With a autozone price of $220 I was thinking just to put a toggle switch in. An Ebay seller sold me the OEM switch for $100. Ebay let's you make counteroffers. The seller wanted $129 for the new switch. I made 5 counteroffers
and none accepted but the seller lowered the price twice. I needed the part to be shipped so when the seller offered $29 less and hit $100 I gave up trying to get the price down further. David Lackey Electrical Auto in greenville sc installed the switch for $80. David did work for me in the 1990s. I would do it myself but I am selling the truck and Highway 85 so dangerous I need the lights to work for both me and future drivers of the truck. Low beam headlights are critical safety features so instead of me trying to do it following the Haynes manual David did it in 1 hour 15 minutes if not faster. Because the streering wheel must come off both electrical and steering issues scared me enough to let David do it. Otherwise I would like to fix the original myself but the truck is my daily driver and time of the essence. Thanks for your help Puttputtinpup. Your pointing out the switch as a common cause gave me confidence with others recommending the same to buy one. Even David was not 100% sure the switch replaced would fix the problem.

I am going to look inside the old switch I still have to see what exactly went wrong. When the low beams went out intermittently it looked like a loose wire.

When you take it apart, put a rag over the sw when taking the grey covers off. The switches for the 81-87 Pup and trooper have springs and little ball bearings inside that'll fly everywhere if you don't watch it! Walmart carries a wd40 contact cleaner that may help w the burned contacts. They have it near the tools... wrenches & sockets aisle. Years ago I took the sw apart on my 82 pup bc the turn signal stalk was very stiff. Also a tiny pc of very fine emory cloth on the contacts will bring them bk to life.

To test your old one, you can unplug the new one under the steering column and plug the old 'refurbished' one in.

Glad you're up & running again. I know full well how busy 85 can be and pulling wigglewagons compounds the stress!

When you get tour

My biggest fear was me or someone else driving the truck down 85 and not only the low beams already gone out but also the high beams.

Thank you for the caution to use a cloth to cover the switch while unscrewing the backplate.
