From the 2.3 engine you need to swap to the 2.6:
-all the accessories & brackets except use the 2.6 water pump pulley, all the smog stuff
-intake w/ carb, exhaust manifold if the EGR tube won't bolt up at each end
-distributor, maybe coil
-oil pan
-engine plate, fylwheel & clutch
-you will need to install an electric fuel pump, there is no boss machined into the 2.6 head for the 2.3 mechanical pump
-one motor mount has a different part #, think driver's side, but the 2.3 mount may work
That's all I can think of right now. The valve lash on a 2.6 is .008/.008, not .006/.010 like a 2.3. If your donor engine has the 4x4 2pc oil pan you may need to use the 2.3 oil pickup tube- don't forget the gasket.

You should be able to use the stock carb with no problem. I am guessing you still haven't got all the issues ironed out yet?

I'm upgrading to a 2.6 (from a 1990 4x4 trooper) to replace a 2.3 gas in my 1990 pickup. So the 4x4 oil pan won't work? I'd like to use it since it's heavy duty and has a windage tray!

A 2wd oilpan won't clear the front 4x4 drivetrain, not sure if there is a similar problem with a 4x4 oilpan clearing something in a 2wd truck. Try it & see, report back.

Will be a few weeks but I'll get back on if this oil pan works. I think it will as there isn't anything where the deep sump hangs down. As long as the exhaust clears that sump I think it is a go.

The main reason to use the 2.3 oil pan is that, at least on a 4x4 & I think also an a 2x4, it has a channel machined into it to accept the clutch cable housing and align it properly with the clutch arm. Since a 2.6 has a hydraulic clutch on the opposite side the cable slot isn't there in the 2.6 oil pan. Sorry, I should have clarified this in an earlier reply, rather than just saying "use the 2.3 oil pan".

On the 2.3 the engine to tranmission bracket has a hole for the clutch cable so if you mount a small bracket with the same diameter hole using a longer bolt between the engine and transmission it will take care of the cable. :)
