95 2.3L fuel injection.. Been thinking about modifying my exhaust to gain a little hp and mileage.. Would like to use what I already have instead of dumping money into it.. I have an old glass pack and a muffler from a 600cc sport bike..

600cc muffler.. At first thought I wouldn't think a 600cc muffler would move enough air for a 2400cc motor but the bike exhaust put out WAY more air on the bike than my truck puts out plus the bike redlines up in the 12,000 rpm range where the 2.3L redlines at what 6,500 or something and I probably never rec over 5,500 or 6 tops and thats rare.. So I think it moves enough air, anyone disagree.? plus it could also be modified / shortened to move more..

Would I gain more by removing the converter and leaving a stock muffler or removing stock muffler and leaving the converter.? I don't want to make it an open or close to open exhaust by drilling out the cat AND putting a free flow muffler on it.. Maybe drill a hole down the middle of the cat and change the muffler.?. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated..

Also.. The stock muffler is right off the cat and then a few feet of exhaust pipe back to the tip behind drivers rear wheel.. Could I just attach the glass pack or bike muffler where the stock muffler lives and NOT run it out to the edge of the truck somewhere, leaving it to vent exhaust fumes under the truck bed.?. Wouldn't leak into the cab at that point rendering me unconscience right, lol.?

So here's my plan unless someone changes my mind with a potential downfall.. I'd like to take off stock muffler and all the piping after it and just throw on a glass pack or that bike muffler to where the muffler attaches now, right after the converter, no tail pipe after that.. Potential downfalls or warnings anyone.? Stupid idea.? Would I get more benifits by just losing the converter.? Do I definitly need tail pipe after muffler.?
Thanks for all the advice and help I've recieved here since I've been a member..
- Joe

yea i dont think you would have to worry about fumes as long as your not idleing for hours at a time. Either way you could probally add a tailpipe on after awhile if you did start smelling exhaust fumes.

I cut the cat off, ran a Thrush glass pack from that right through the big hole where the pipe normally runs through to the muffler, & no tail pipe without any fume problems (even idling in traffic windows down) but I do get a "backfire" sound since there's no length out the glass pack 8)

My truck is running on a muffler from a 450cc race-spec dirt bike, and I have no real problems with airflow for me! We left the cat, and cut out all the pipe behind it. We then put on some new pipe, and placed the muffler at the tip. She sounds smooth!

My 90 model has a glasspack on it. When the previous owner had it I noticed the old muffler had completely disappeared. So there was nothing to cut off, I just put a cherry bomb glasspack on it for him. Was gonna hook the tail pipe back up, but it was rotten and full of mud and rocks...so no tail pipe :). It still has the cat on it. It's not too terribly loud. Now loud popping or anything like that, which surprised me. I think it has one of those old school GM type cat's, so I am prolly gonna knock the plug out and let the beads out. Atleast then it will pass the visual check, and we don't have to pass a sniffer around here.
