2.3 Pickup 90Amp Alternator Upgrade

Postby Dartheyeball » Fri Mar 27, 2015 5:14 pm

I upgraded my stock Hitachi 50 amp to a Hitachi 90 AMP alternator. The alternator I used nearly bolts into the stock location with minor modification.

You will need:

90 AMP Alternator from SOHC 90-94 Nissan Maxima

5/16x5 M8 bolt, washer, locking washer, nut

Nissan 2 pin alt connector (The 90-94 SOHC maximas, 90s Nissan Quests/Mercury Villagers all used the same connectors.)

Slightly smaller bolt, locking washer, and nut (Upper tensioner bracket)

I used a 90 AMP alternator that fits in a 90-94 Nissan Maxima SOHC model. The alternator from DOHC version will not work because it is much larger. I was able to get a reman'd unit from Rock Auto for $45 shipped. I have seen them on the web for $66 which is rather inexpensive.

The Nissan alternator's mounting bolts line up with stock location, however the bolts holes on the 90 AMP are smaller than the stock 50 AMP. I used a 5/16 x 5 M8 bolt, washer. locking washer, and nut that I was able to get from Fastenal. The top tensioning bolt unfortunately won't match up with the threads unless you either use a smaller bolt and nut or you drill the hole in the tensioner bracket larger. I opted to use a smaller bolt, locking washer, and nut.

Also, you will need to swap the stock pulley over to the new alternator. When you place the V1 pulley on the alternator, add the locking washer from the 50 AMP to the locking washer on the 90 AMP. Be careful not to over tighten the nut because it can affect how the alternator spins. Before installation make sure that the alternator spins freely and doesn't bind.

The 90 AMP alternator is slightly larger than the stock one. So you will have to work it into place and make sure to place the belt on the alternator before you bolt anything down. There will be some play on the lower mounting bolt due to the smaller bolt size. Alternatively, you could probably drill out a larger bolt opening to match the factory size, but I lacked the tools to do so. Once everything is tightened up, the alternator won't be going anywhere.

***Make sure the 2 pin connector is plugged in before you mount 90 AMP alt, because it will be facing the engine block.****

On the 90 AMP 2 pin connector, the left spade is the 12v + out that you want to connect the L and IG wires to.

The wires for the Sense (white/black stripe) and Batt+ (large white/blue stripe) will both be connected to the Batt+ connector on the back of the 90 AMP.

The 12+ V out wire on the 2 pin connector will be connected to both the Lamp(white/blue) and IGN (white/yello) wires

I made a quick disconnect harness, so that I can switch between the two alternators if a problem should arise.

The new 90 AMP puts out between 14-16 volts at idle. With my fan on high, and my Xenon lights on, the alternator put out 15.30 volts.

It was worth it to upgrade.

Old thread but just curious how this alternator is holding up? Still worth the investment?
