Back online, but not fully restored

Postby JoeIsuzu » Mon Jan 20, 2020 8:21 pm

The site had an almost worst-case scenario. We lost two disk drives, which corrupted all site data.

Since then, we have replaced ALL the disks in the server, but I am still in the tedious process of recovering data. We had daily backups, but unfortunately, the disks began corrupting data some time before they ultimately failed. So during that time (and unknown to us), we were backing up corrupted files.

I eventually had to restore the site to the last GOOD backup -- from November 22, 2018. That means:
  • Anyone who joined since that date is no longer registered (for now).
  • All posts and private messages since that date are gone (for now).
I'm manually sifting through recent backups to hopefully restore some good data -- particularly user accounts and posts. So if your account is gone, please contact me and I'll prioritize getting it restored.

I'll use this topic for any future updates.

If you're a site member, thanks for being patient and checking back. :)

Thanks for your hard work in getting the site back, I'm sure that was frustrating but very much appreciated. Thanks again and best luck on remaining tasks.

Ahoy! Ditto on the above comments. Also, sorta glad to see that all the erroneous info I posted after Nov 2018 has gone away....(just kidding)!

Hello Jack,
I am not really computer literate, and I am not familiar with the processes you are going through, but it sure sounds like it is extremely time consuming, and probably frustrating to say the least. Thank you for undertaking this labor of love! Your efforts make our efforts even possible in the first place. Those cumulative efforts have yielded an extremely informative, useful, interesting, friendly site, that always makes a trip here leave me feeling like I have gained something for it. I've stopped by often, hopeful the site would be back up and running. It is now, and I am very glad.
You've already done a great job. Anything more is a great plus.
Chris

Wow, I didn't realize how many are still visiting the site. The daily posts had gone down over time, but I guess quite a few are still visiting and reading. Thanks for the encouragement.

Thanks for all the work. I’d been away for awhile - new job busyness, and I’d gotten the truck to a real good place. Was a bit shocked when site was down. Thanks again.
