Long Bed Diesel DLX headed north on I-5

Postby Halden » Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:02 pm

I had a thrilling moment on the freeway today after i dropped my brother off at the airport. Heading home (north) through Everett, I spotted a Pup so I caught up and had my friend snap a couple photos, not too creepy right? Maybe he's a member? I also saw one turning onto a street while I was at a light in my Pup, but it was a gasser so I didn't care  Kidding of course...

The first guy was managing a good 65, so its definitely not a 4x4, I was in my Hyundai which is how I caught up

Nice one. Catch and release. ;)

I spotted one in Memphis yesterday, but since I didn't get a photo, I didn't bother to create a new topic for it. He passed me on a major boulevard, going the opposite direction. I waved and he just looked. I did a quick U-ey and caught up with him about a half mile later. It was in fair shape, and from the sound, it was a diesel--but no "diesel" badges. Pulled up beside him at a red light, and he wouldn't so much as nod. I have NEVER gotten that kind of reaction before. :(

I need to get a sign for each car my family that says "Nice P'up!". I couldn't get a look from this guy, maybe because I was in a normal car....

That is not true. I have hit more than 65 in my 4 speed 4x4 more times than I care to remember. Can't really tell if it is a 4x4 or not though. It looks like it has LS rims but that is not an LS mirror. One thing I do know, at 18 or 19 years old your hands should be at 10 and 2 o'clock on the wheel. Surely not driving and taking pictures.

Jason, No worries, I had a friend who was in the car take the picture for me. I suppose It could have been a 4x4, but when I drove by it, it didn't sound like the engine was screaming to death like it would if it was a 4speed. It was a DLX P'up, you can't really see the emblem in the picture... It didn't have LS rims from what I could tell. I don't think they were original though.

As for getting my P'up up to 65, I don't think that'll ever happen  , I've done 60 twice for brief moments, but it was running too high for my comfort. I usually run it at 54 or 53, I get a little tiny tiny bit better mileage that way. What can I say I am a bit of a wuss... But I have over-sized tires so I am going faster...

I'm just curious, was it just the 4WD 4-Speeds that had trouble exceeding 65 mph, or was it specific to the 4WD models themselves? I have long enjoyed seeing the needle go past the 85 and into the further abyss with my truck, with enough pedal and engine power left to do more.

The 4X4 have 411 gears. I put 15" trooper wheels on my 85 and it makes a real difference.

Steve, The 4spd 4x4 can go faster but by the time you are doing 55 your RPMs are a little above 3000... Getting to 60 puts them at almost 3500 (If I remember correctly), and on the Diesel it red-lines at 4000. And on top of that Diesels just don't like running fast. Later they did come out with 5spd 4x4 that could go faster easier...

Halden, do you know if the Diesel 2WD models will reach 85+ mph like the gasoline motors? I've never seen a diesel model in real life, or researched the specifications of the 190 or 223 engines and their corresponding gear ratios.

The will, if they're running right. With the 3.73 rear end and factory tires, you'd be turning about 3,600 RPM.

Steve, Jack is right. I remember as a little boy (I was about 5 or 6) my dad and I went to Utah and we had to drive through Idaho, I remember we hit 80 through Idaho at one point and I thought that was really cool, but we were going down a hill with a tail wind. We were carrying a load too. He didn't hold it too long since the truck had a cooling issue, but that event stuck in my mind. I know Jason has done some really extreme (at least I think so) things with his Pup.

We oughtta get footage of someone doing 85 in their Pup and send it to Guinness World Records or something...

I am curious, does anyone think it'd be okay to run mine at 60 for a long period? It makes me nervous....

Agreed!

Honestly though, I used to be afraid that going too fast would break the needle off and I'd never get it back on if I went too fast. #Pupproblems

I've got another with the needle buried somewhere, just couldn't find it. Jack, why is it that for the last day or so I haven't been getting notified of replies to topics that I post in? I had no idea there was a reply to this thread.
