I've used the Purulator from Discount then Advancne for 41 oil changes when they were $5.99 or $4.99 on sale. They still order them and did you know Purolator invented the oil filter and I have cut one open and there not cardboard like Fram.Pure oil now and later,

reply to Joeisuzu:

From the filter list that started this thread, the L34002 purolator Pep Boys sold me is for 84-87. Am taking wild guess that isuzu maybe increased the size of oil cooler under the oil filter and oil filter thread size to increase oil flow and cooling for turbo engines, but made it a general upgrade for all c223 engines 84-87, standard and turbo.

If had this list before doing my 1st oil change on truck, then I could have asked them for the correct L20290 filter.

But I was new and dumb. Was not until had oil completely drained and pulled old oil filter out and tried to put new one on did I realize had wrong filter. Wrong time to learn that lesson!!! :(

Cleaned up, got on this website, searched, found this thread, called Napa, they had two right filters in stock, went there and bought both of them, put one one. Problem solved.

Was servicing truck to get it ready for my 1st smog and registration inspection with Nevada DMV. Yes, Nevada passed law few years ago that all passenger diesels need to be smogged.

Passed and ready to take my 1st off-road prospecting trip in a few days.

Yes, the truck is old, loud, and at 60mph on highway 90% of other drivers fly passed me.

But it was cheap to buy, cheap to service, and at 32 mpg cheap to drive.

olddesertrat,

Is your oil cooler black painted steel or stainless steel? There was a change to the stainless steel oil cooler around '85, though I have an '86 Turbo which had the steel oil cooler. In any case, they take different filters and the L34002 is for the stainless steel cooler and the L20290 is for the steel cooler.

Steve, that change was between the '83 and '84 years. The '81-'83 coolers had a round base, and the '84-on had a square-ish base. I'm not sure about material or finish.

The round base is steel and the square base is stainless steel. Those years might be right, but I haven't found that to be entirely true based on what I've seen. I think I remember a post from Jerry way back when where he said he saw the round base steel oil cooler used in years past '84.

The Purolater L34002 is what I have used on my 85 for 41 oil changes. It has the square stainless cooler.

The square-ish base is also prone to leaking, from what's been reported here.

And I'm guilty of overtightening but 202000 and doing fine. They have cheap little chain wrenches that will get most any filter off.I sure like Jacks pop on the top one.I wonder how many of the list it works on as the top indentations seem to different on some.I have 3 smaller versions.

Is there anything wrong with the Purolator oil filter? Advance has them for $3.99 ea. Are they made by Fram?

Old thread but this is how I found out my '83 titled P'up is must have been a late '83 as it uses a '84 and newer oil filter. You'd be amazed how important the build date is in getting the correct parts. When you buy parts for anything, take a look at the build date on the door jam. It might save you a trip back to the parts store.

Interesting. Does it have a draft tube, or does it recirculate the crankcase vapors?
