starter

When mine wouldn't start, tried towing in in higher gears, no luck. I would only start when towed in reverse. Lots of people in the parking lot at work got a good show. BTW, bypassing the "clutch safety switch" cured the starting problem.

Have not had the timing belt replaced, it may be past due. '86 model 115k miles. I knew the original owner, he never did much PM so likely everything needs to be done. I have only changed the oil, put a new master brake cylinder and two slave cylinders in, new pads and shoes. Bypassed the clutch saf...

C223 diesel prob

I'm back, got the '86 running for a short time, now it sounds good at idle but makes scary noises and loses power at speed. Anyone have an idea?
The noises sound like metal in a coffee can. Will I have to pull the engine and have it rebuilt?

I'm no mechanic, but the "car guy" here at work recommends the Fleetguard or Wix. I'll let the real knuckle-busters have their say.

oh my

When my signals flashed rapidly there was a shorted bulb in the front turn lamp. Never saw one fail short instead of open. I found a Chilton's manual in the local library. It says that a slow blink would be an open. If it's like mine, there is rust and corrosion in every connection. If it's fast loo...

it starts now

Want to thank you guys for all the help. Not real confident of the cure, but so far it has been starting consistently. Bypassed the clutch safety switch. (!) Still a lot of corrosion on connections here and there and everywhere.

oh my

I hope that's it. I have mine in the shop now, sometimes won't start, told mechanic to check conections for corrosion. Every plug I unplugged looks oxidized. I have been pulled over for no license plate lights: bulbs had no ground because of rust. Maybe I will drive through a pond of WD40.

Any idea where to find a workshop manual for a '86 diesel pup C223 non-turbo?

clutch cable

Me too. The tow truck driver knew what it was immediately, no mechanic or the local dealer had a clue. (?) I found some BAWs at work (big *** washers) and it held temporarily. Backed it with some thick sheet metal later. Had to pull off the road to readjust the tension every few weeks. Will be at st...

Just joined with a diesel problem (my own fault) and got some good feedback within a couple of hours. I have an '86 diesel manual trans, 115,000 on the odometer. Good (but smokey) engine. Started right up after sitting for years, all it took was a new battery. Would like to have the doors replaced. ...

diesel starter solenoid

That was quick! I can see this is going to be a good place. About mine: it's an '86 diesel manual trans. Was my landlord's, had been in a shed for years. Only 115,000 on the odometer, but rusty. Can relate to the driver's side door guy, been getting in and out the passenger side. The hinges were rus...

diesel starter solenoid

I had my 86 pup jump started, and it apparently welded the solenoid. Any good sources? My local parts guy says it's an obsolete part and very expensive.
